Out of the Mouths of Babes
Out of the Mouths of Babes is an online Gallery of Voices that curates writing from inside real women’s experiences. In particular, the region of experience that has been relegated to silence for generations: Motherhood.
What is not curated here: the ten best ways to get your kid to eat broccoli, vintage kitchens, or products to make mothering so much cuter or more gadget-y. Here you will find blog posts, poems, and essays by women exploring what it means to have creative yearnings while also having families.
The writing here explores the question, How can women do the creative work they feel called to do in the world, if that work happens alongside motherhood? What becomes of the late-night longing to create and express amidst the challenges of raising responsible, capable human beings?
It’s understandable that we lose ourselves to our children, our homes, our jobs, our many wonderful and complicated relationships, and it’s understandable that we should not want to do that. How do we not lose ourselves? Out of the Mouths of Babes contributor Erika Nelson answers this question brilliantly: “We write, we speak, and we refuse to fade away.”
This gallery is dedicated to that refusal, and it is devoted to helping women see that motherhood and creative yearnings do not have to be in conflict. Out of the Mouths of Babes seeks to cultivate a fierce appreciation for the creative energy motherhood inspires.
Thank you for being here. Thank you for supporting the voices of women who mother.
“You are tapping into an old, powerful font of wisdom in women’s voices—especially the voices of mothers—and I have a feeling it’s going to take you to places you never imagined you’d go! THANK YOU for all you’re doing to strengthen women’s voices in the world.”
