Out of the Mouths of Babes

Rachelle Panagarry

When I was invited to write a guest post for this blog, I must admit, it came along at what was starting to become a really busy time for me.  I had been taking some sick leave from my full-time job as a school teacher and at the same time I had started to immerse myself in making art and generally being more creative.

Being creative was a real conscious decision that I made one day whilst laying in a hospital bed sometime in 2010.  I was there being treated for some unknown ailment which turned out to be an infected pacemaker, and although you might be thinking this was a bad thing, it was but it was also the most wonderful thing that has happened to me recently.  It was that, that made me stop and think, and really see what I wanted from my life.  I guess when you are surrounded by women who have suffered heart attacks, some a similar age to me,  you sit up and take notice.  That’s what I did.

I’ve been teaching for the last ten years, after being a late starter and raising a son as a single Mom and teaching is something I love to do, I love the children, the school and everything about it.  But despite this love, over the last five years I have started to long to make more art, to be more creative myself, just for me.

Art was always my first real love, I doodled on anything that was doodle-able, and studied art at college, but it was my art that I put to one side when I became a Mom.  There was no question at the time that this was what I would do, my lovely son, now a man came first.  He brought love, fun and a whole new sense of creativity to my life, and even though I did raise him alone, I wouldn’t change it for a minute.  Now, he is attending university studying Graphic Design (yes he is arty like his momma)and I couldn’t be more proud.

So with the illness, and the wake up call that it gave me, along with some time at home, now , I am making art once more.  The last twelve months have seen me transition personally and grow creatively in more ways than I could ever have imagined.  I now have a very supportive husband, two step-children and a four year old daughter (and she’s an arty chick too – I’m training her young!).

I now blog, paint, draw, glue, and generally get messy every few days, and I LOVE it.  I have had the pleasure of writing guest posts on some fabulous websites, had some of my art published and met so many lovely new friends.  I still teach full-time and am a Mom, but most of all, now I can say this too,

I am an ARTIST and I can’t tell you how good that feels.
